Why Memorize Scripture?

We need to know what the Bible says so we can be more like Jesus.
Memorizing scriptures gives us ammunition against sin when we face temptation.
We have verses to share with those who need an encouraging word in hard times.
It helps us to be obedient to God’s commands.
We will have the words we need when are sharing our faith with someone.

Just to name a few.

Dallas Willard wrote, “Bible memorization is absolutely fundamental to spiritual formation. If I had to choose between all the disciplines of the spiritual life, I would choose Bible memorization, because it is a fundamental way of filling our minds with what it needs. This book of the law shall not depart out of your mouth. That’s where you need it! How does it get in your mouth? Memorization”

Read the verse reference and then the verse(s). As you build your familiarity with them try different ways to recite them. Read the verse and guess the verse reference. Read the verse reference and recite the verse(s) without looking at the words. Trying memorizing the first line, then a little bit more until you have memorize the whole verse.
